We recommend flying into San Diego International Airport (SAN) or Tijuana International Airport (TIJ) and grabbing a rental car for the weekend. Valle does not have rideshare readily available, so this is your easiest way to get around the region.

Renting from San Diego? You'll need to book through Hertz — they're the only agency that allows their cars across the border. A couple of things to keep in mind based on their rental terms:

  • You'll need to add a Mexico Insurance Policy at the time of pickup ($38–$48/day depending on vehicle) — a credit card is required for this

  • Not all vehicles are eligible, so double-check your specific car is cleared for Mexico when you pick it up

Alternatively, you can cross the border on foot into Tijuana and rent a car from there — this skips the cross-border restrictions entirely and is often a simpler option.

There are 3 toll booths along the highway into Valle, each around 50 pesos (~$3 USD). We'd recommend having 200 pesos or $10 USD cash on hand so you're not caught off guard.

Drive Time (TIJ) - 1.5 to 2 hours

Drive Time (SAN) - 2 to 2.5 hours

If you live within a reasonable driving distance, we highly recommend the drive to Valle. If you are driving from the US, we recommend crossing and returning through the San Diego border.
